Sri Lanka's main international airport is Bandaranaike International Airport (code CMB), serving the Colombo/Negombo area.
As of a check on 02/06/2026, no fixed, verified direct flight from Tel Aviv to Colombo was found. Most routes from Israel include one or more connections, typically via the Gulf states, Turkey, or another intermediate hub.
Common connection points: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Doha, Istanbul, Athens — and others depending on season and availability.

2Visa & entry
Before flying to Sri Lanka, check the official ETA website and the Department of Immigration and Emigration website for the current entry requirements for Israelis. ETA and visa policy changes from time to time.
Per official sources, entry generally requires:
A passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival.
A confirmed return or onward ticket.
Sufficient funds for the stay.
Don't rely on phrases like "visa-free" or "free ETA" without an official check close to your travel date. If a list of eligible countries or a free-ETA scheme exists, confirm Israel's inclusion directly at the official source at the time of checking.
The authoritative source is Israel's National Security Council / gov.il. As of a check in June 2026, the severe advisory imposed in October 2024 has been lifted: the rating that stood at Level 4 in the southwest and Level 3 elsewhere has been reduced to Level 2 ("occasional threat") for all of Sri Lanka, following situation assessments, protective measures and terror-suspect arrests.
Level 2 means there is no call to avoid travel, but standard caution is advised: follow local guidance, stay updated via the media, and check the official status on gov.il close to your travel date (levels can change).
The Arugam Bay area, which was the focus of the 2024 advisory, is no longer under the severe advisory — but as anywhere in Sri Lanka, exercise standard caution.

4When to fly
There's no single season that suits all of Sri Lanka. The country is affected by two monsoons, so plan by region.
South & west — Colombo, Galle, Mirissa, Bentota, Weligama
December through April are generally considered more favorable for the southern and western beaches.
East — Trincomalee, Arugam Bay, Pasikuda
The east coast suits a different season than the south and west; per tourism sources, September through November can be more suitable. Always check current weather and the travel advisory before recommending Arugam Bay.
Hill country — Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella
Weather is cooler than the coastal areas, and rain is possible even in transition periods.
General breakdown: December–April suits the south, west and Cultural Triangle best; May–June the southwest monsoon mainly affects the southwest; July–September can suit the east coast, subject to checking; October–November is a transition period with less predictable weather.
Minimum 7–8 days — a quick taste: the Cultural Triangle, hill country and one beach.
Ideal 12–14 days — combine culture, nature, the railway, safari and beach without rushing.
Longer trip, 16–21 days — add the east coast, another safari, or a slower pace.

Days 2–3: Sigiriya and Dambulla.

Sigiriya Rock Fortress — an ancient, famous rock fortress in the center of the country, with palace ruins, gardens, water reservoirs and frescoes.
Dambulla Cave Temple — a complex of caves and temples, easily combined with Sigiriya and the Cultural Triangle.
Kandy — a central hill-country city, a hub between the Cultural Triangle, tea country and Ella; suits 1–2 nights.
Temple of the Tooth — an important religious site in Kandy, for those interested in culture, religion and history.
Ella — a hill-country area with views, bridges and waterfalls; common attractions: Nine Arches Bridge, Little Adam's Peak, Ravana Falls.
Kandy–Ella railway — one of the famous hill-country scenic train routes, but as of September 2026 the line is not yet fully restored after cyclone damage to the upcountry line in November 2025: trains from Colombo currently reach only as far as Rambukkana station, and the hill section (Kandy–Ella) remains under repair. Check current status and book tickets through an official source before relying on this route; seats are not guaranteed.
Nuwara Eliya — a cool hill-country area, known for tea plantations and green scenery.
Galle Fort — a historic area in the southwest; walls, old streets, restaurants and cafés. Suits a day trip or a short stay.
Mirissa — a southern beach area for beaches, surfing and food. Check season and sea conditions.
Yala National Park — one of the best-known safari parks. Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed.
Udawalawe National Park — another safari park, suits a nature-and-wildlife route.
Polonnaruwa — an important historic site in the Cultural Triangle, easily combined with Sigiriya and Dambulla.
Unawatuna — a southern beach town, known as a beach and diving spot.
Trincomalee — a northeastern coastal area, suiting a different season than the south and west. Always check weather and travel advisories.
Arugam Bay — a surf-and-beach area in the east. Due to past advisories affecting Israelis, presented here as information only, not a travel recommendation, and requires a current gov.il check.

Colombo
For a first or last night, and for those who want a city with restaurants and urban services. Pro: services and a convenient transit point. Con: less suited to nature or beach seekers.
Negombo
For a late landing or an early flight — close to the airport and convenient for starting your route. Con: not necessarily the most interesting destination in itself.
Sigiriya / Dambulla
A good base for the Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa), suits 2 nights. Con: not a beach area and requires internal travel.
Kandy
A transit hub for the hill country, temples and culture, with good connections to Ella and Nuwara Eliya. Con: a relatively busy city, not a beach destination.
Ella
For nature, views and short hikes — suits couples and backpackers. Con: a relatively long approach and tourist crowding in certain seasons.
Galle
For couples, families and a relaxed trip in the south, combining beach and history. Con: can be pricier and less suited to hill-country nature seekers.
Mirissa / Weligama
Beach, surfing and cafés — suits the end of a route. Con: season-dependent and can get crowded.
Trincomalee
An east-coast beach in the right season, suits a longer itinerary. Con: farther away, and season/advisory must be checked.

8Transport
Main options: trains, buses, a private driver, taxis, tuk-tuks, and the PickMe app and Uber in certain areas.
Trains — suited to a scenic experience, especially in the hill country; not always fast. Book tickets in advance for popular routes. Official seat reservation site: seatreservation.railway.gov.lk.
Private driver — convenient for families, couples and a multi-stop itinerary. We don't publish a price without a current check.
Tuk-tuks — very common for short distances; agree on a price in advance or use an app.
PickMe — a popular local ride-hailing app; availability varies by area.
Car rental — less recommended for the average Israeli traveler: left-side driving, congested roads and driving patterns different from Israel.

The local currency is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). Official rates are published on the Central Bank of Sri Lanka's website and change daily.
Hotels, tourist restaurants and some city shops accept credit cards.
In rural areas, markets, tuk-tuks and small restaurants — cash matters. Carry local cash rather than relying on cards alone.
ATMs are available in cities and tourist areas, but not always in remote areas.

There is Jewish / Chabad activity in Sri Lanka, mainly serving Jewish and Israeli travelers. That said, an active kosher restaurant should not be assumed without a current check.
Kosher-observant travelers should check in advance for kosher food, Shabbat meals, holidays or a synagogue directly with the local Chabad house or Jewish contact. Don't rely on fixed availability without confirming close to your trip.
