Israel's National Security Council (gov.il) currently rates Armenia at advisory level 3, due to its geographic proximity to Iran. This is a recommendation, not a legal prohibition — travel to Armenia is fully legal and Armenia is not among the countries Israeli citizens are legally barred from entering (Iran, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Yemen). The decision and responsibility rest with each traveler, per the National Security Council's own guidance.

1Why Armenia

Armenia is a small, mountainous country in the South Caucasus with an ancient Christian history (the first nation in the world to adopt Christianity as a state religion, in 301 CE), striking monasteries set against mountain backdrops, and a capital — Yerevan — that blends Soviet-era architecture, museums, café culture and a serious wine and brandy tradition. Ninety minutes away is Dilijan, nicknamed "the Armenian Switzerland" for its forests and hills.

2Flights from Israel

There is currently a direct flight between Tel Aviv and Yerevan (EVN), operated by FlyOne Armenia, taking roughly two and a half hours. Note: carriers and frequencies on this route change relatively often — before booking, check live availability and pricing.

3Visa for Israelis

Contrary to a common assumption, Armenia is not visa-free for Israelis — Israel does not appear on Armenia's visa-free country list. There are two ways to get a visa: an e-Visa in advance via the official portal evisa.mfa.am, or a visa on arrival at Zvartnots Airport and land border crossings. Allowed stay length and the exact fee vary — check the details directly on the official site before travelling. A passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates is a baseline requirement.

4Best time to visit

  • May–June and September–October — the recommended windows: mild temperatures, green landscapes in spring, harvest season and autumn colour in the fall.
  • Summer (July–August) — hot and very dry in Yerevan (can reach the mid-30s°C and above); the city sits on a plateau around 1,000m.
  • Winter — cold and snowy; the main ski resort is Tsaghkadzor.
  • Dilijan and the Lake Sevan area are noticeably cooler and greener than Yerevan — a good summer escape from the capital's heat.

5Yerevan & Dilijan — attractions

Yerevan

  • Republic Square — the central square, ringed by Soviet-era tuff-stone buildings; a musical fountain show runs on summer evenings.
  • Cascade Complex & Cafesjian Center for the Arts — a giant limestone stairway (572 steps) with an outdoor sculpture garden (including works by Botero) and an art museum inside. Free to climb.
  • Vernissage market — a large open-air market for crafts, carpets, antiques and jewellery. Open daily, but weekends (especially Saturday-Sunday) are when it's fully populated.
  • Tsitsernakaberd Armenian Genocide Memorial & Museum — free admission; closed on Mondays.
  • Matenadaran — the Institute of Ancient Manuscripts, one of the richest manuscript collections in the world.
  • The Blue Mosque — an 18th-century Persian mosque, the only working mosque in Armenia.
  • Yerevan Brandy Company (ARARAT) — factory tours with tasting.

Day trips from Yerevan

  • Geghard Monastery — a UNESCO World Heritage Site, partly carved into rock.
  • Echmiadzin Cathedral — a UNESCO World Heritage Site, seat of the Armenian Apostolic Church.
  • Garni Temple — a 1st-century Hellenistic-style temple, the only one of its kind in the region (note: this is not a UNESCO site, a common misconception). Usually paired with Geghard in one day.
  • Khor Virap — a monastery with the classic view of Mount Ararat across the Turkish border.
  • Lake Sevan — one of the world's largest high-altitude freshwater lakes, with a peninsula monastery.

Dilijan — "the Armenian Switzerland"

About 97 km from Yerevan, roughly a 90-minute drive. A forested mountain town with monasteries, hiking and a relaxed pace.

  • Dilijan National Park — forested mountain trails, including a section of the Transcaucasian Trail.
  • Haghartsin Monastery — 10th–13th century, in dense forest just outside town.
  • Sharambeyan Street — a restored old-town craft street with workshops and a museum.
  • Parz Lake (Parz Lich) — a small forest lake with boating and a zipline.

6Transport & airport

  • Zvartnots Airport (EVN) is about 12 km west of central Yerevan, roughly 20-30 minutes by road.
  • Ride-hailing apps operate in the city — Yandex Go and a local app called GG are the most commonly used.
  • Yerevan Metro — a single line, 10 stations, flat fare — quick but limited in coverage.
  • Buses and marshrutkas (minibuses) are the real backbone of city transport.
  • To Dilijan and Lake Sevan — marshrutkas and shared taxis from Yerevan's bus stations, plus many organised day tours.
  • Self-drive car rental is available and common among tourists.

7Internet & eSIM

  • Three mobile operators: Viva, Team and Ucom — all with nationwide 4G coverage and partial 5G rollout.
  • All three support eSIM, and tourist SIM counters are available in the Zvartnots arrivals hall.
  • Bring your passport on arrival — it may be required for activation.

8Money & language

  • The currency is the Armenian dram (AMD).
  • Yerevan is comfortably card-friendly — Visa/Mastercard, Apple Pay and Google Pay are widely accepted at hotels, restaurants and malls. Outside the capital, carry cash.
  • Per Expatistan (May 2026), Armenia runs roughly 48% cheaper than Israel on average — a general comparative estimate, not a fixed price.
  • Tipping isn't obligatory; 5-10% is common in Yerevan restaurants when no service charge is included, and rounding up taxi fares is normal.
  • The official language is Armenian, with its own 39-letter alphabet. Russian is widely understood, and English is common among younger people and in Yerevan's tourism sector.

Do Israelis need a visa for Armenia?
